Sunday, 1 June 2025

The June 2025 edition of The Gene Radio Show, presented by Maxine, featured Ranger Lily, a young leader, and other girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers. This month's programme was dedicated to the theme of camping, with anticipation for the upcoming Girlguiding Essex North East county camp in Chelmsford.

The team discussed preparations for the county camp, highlighting portable stove practice and recommending camp songs like '40 Years'. Stargazing at camp was encouraged. They also explored various camp-related badges available on the Girlguiding website, including Camp Stage badges one to six, and shared ideas for campfire cooking such as making dampers and toasting marshmallows.

About this show

The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides, and you could hear it. This was Girlguiding Essex North East’s own programme: Maxine J in the chair, and a rotating crew of young co-hosts from units across the county. They talked about guiding life, swapped community stories, and got politicians and celebrities to sit still for a chat. For more than a decade the microphone belonged to the Guides.

It started on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon on 3 May 2009. That station has since closed. The on-air seventh birthday landed on 1 May 2016, which is how the Saint FM years add up to 71 editions, the last of them on 1 March 2015. Gene then moved to Chelmsford Community Radio, first Sunday of the month, beginning 5 April 2015 and running until 2 August 2026: 137 editions on CCR, and 133 editions still in the listen-again Jukebox archive. The show has now ended.
