The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 2 March 2025
The Gene Radio Show, broadcast on 2nd March 2025, was presented by Maxine alongside girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers. The programme's main theme was International Women's Day, celebrated later in the month, focusing on inspirational women and what inspires the girls in Girlguiding.
The show covered the Girlguiding unit structure from Rainbows to Rangers and celebrated World Thinking Day on 22nd February with pajama parties. Brownies were also planning pancake-making pajama parties. County news included upcoming walking days, a clue-do type day for Rainbows and Brownies, a summer camp, and an international jamboree. The programme featured Kirstie Murphy, the first female Red Arrows pilot, who shared what inspires her in guiding. Listeners were encouraged to search for Girlguiding for flexible guiding opportunities.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
