The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 6 October 2024
The October edition of The Gene Radio Show was presented by Maxine and girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers. The programme's main theme was "Brownies in Wonderland," celebrating Mad Hatter Day with discussions and riddles inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The Guiding team shared recent activities, including Brownies learning the phonetic alphabet and discussions about sewing on camp blanket badges.
Ranger Thayer described a trip with her Brownies to Screens Park, accompanied by a leader known as Twidel Dee, followed by bowling and pizza. The episode also featured Jesse Murphy, the first female pilot in the Red Arrows, who recalled playing a game at her Brownie holiday. Listeners were encouraged to find out more about Guiding at goguiding.org.uk.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
