The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 5 May 2024
The May 2024 edition of The Gene Radio Show celebrated a significant milestone: its 15th anniversary, having first aired in May 2009. Maxine hosted the programme, joined by girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers, including Lilliana and Daya. They welcomed guest Jude, and explored various guiding topics, from unit activities to the prestigious Queen's Guide Award.
The episode featured accounts of a unit mud run and making chocolate truffles. Jude, a Brownie leader and Queen's Guide, shared her experiences with the Queen's Guide Award. Discussions also covered making camps more sustainable using local deliveries. County news included a deadline for forms by May 16th, and Girlguiding Anglia announced plans for a World Thinking Day pajama party in 2025, complete with a special badge.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
