The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 6 August 2023
The August edition of The Gene Radio Show, presented by Maxine, celebrated the exciting activities of Girlguiding Essex North East. Maxine was joined by girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers, who shared their experiences and achievements. The programme highlighted the diverse opportunities available in guiding, with a particular focus on badges and summer adventures.
Listeners heard from Rainbow Thurza about earning her recycling badge, which involves challenges like reducing waste and being a waste detective. Brownies enjoyed baking and overnighters, while Isabelle from Guides tried a big swing, and Nina from Brownies tackled climbing and high ropes. Girlguiding Essex North East also announced the new Sporting Challenge Pack for 2023 and a revamped regional badge. Other activities included canoeing at Paper Mill Lock, a Rainbow scavenger hunt, and leaders from a District participating in activities at an Outdoor Center. The show also looked forward to a Greenfield site next summer.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
