The Gene Radio Show

Sunday, 7 May 2023

The May 2023 edition of The Gene Radio Show featured Maxine in the studio with Jo Dee and Thay, reflecting on a busy period for Girlguiding. The programme highlighted upcoming Coronation celebrations, including a special Coronation Challenge, and encouraged listeners to get involved with Girlguiding. A key theme was the importance of volunteering, with an appeal for new helpers to support Girlguiding activities across the region.

The show detailed the "Brownies Go Explore" challenge pack and promoted "Girl Guiding Anglia's Big Day Out." Plans for the Essex North East Big Gig were discussed, alongside the Essex International Jamboree, which needs 1500 volunteers. Listeners heard memories of a coach trip to a Food Bank and a Canadian adventure. Sue, a County Commissioner, and Rachel, a Ranger, shared their guiding memories, including a past open-top car parade and the Silver Jubilee.

About this show

The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.

It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
