The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 5 February 2023
This February edition of The Gene Radio Show saw Maxine, joined by girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers, dedicate much of the programme to World Thinking Day. The team discussed the history and significance of this annual celebration, encouraging listeners to participate in various activities. Maxine also shared news from her role doing PR for the county, including a week of upcoming celebrations.
Listeners heard about the Essex International Jamboree and how Maxine is now a unit helper. The show explored the "80s challenges" badge and the "Walk the World" activity from the Girlguiding Thinking Day challenge pack. There were suggestions for units to raise money for charity, explore local areas, and grow plants. The programme also touched on the promise changing to reflect the King, while section names and the trefoil logo remain.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
