The Gene Radio Show

Sunday, 4 September 2022

The September edition of The Gene Radio Show, presented by Maxine, featured girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers, with contributions from units across Essex North East and even Snowdonia. The programme explored a range of guiding experiences, including reflections on camps and moving up through sections. It also looked forward to returning to guiding activities after the summer holidays.

The show highlighted various guiding activities, including accounts from Thayer's time at a Guide camp and a first big-scale guiding event. Girls discussed their leadership qualifications and the process of moving from Guides to Rangers, with Max sharing her experience. There were mentions of local Brownie units and Rainbow leaders, as well as news from the region and county. Maxine also spoke about meeting the Chief Guide and the opportunity for all members, including Guides and Rangers, to attend Sangam.

About this show

The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.

It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
