The Gene Radio Show

Sunday, 5 June 2022

Maxine was joined on The Gene Radio Show by Freya, a 10-year-old Guide, and Jody, a young leader at a Brownie Group who also attends Rangers. Together, they explored the history of Girlguiding.

Listeners heard about the first Buckingham Palace Guides, started by Princess Elizabeth. The programme recalled Guides swimming the English Channel in 1966, and the introduction of Rainbows in 1987. Brownie culottes from the 90s were discussed, alongside the 75th anniversary of guiding in 1985. The Centenary Camp in 2010 and a World Camp at Foxleas were highlighted, as was a refresh of badges and awards.

About this show

The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.

It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
