The Gene Radio Show

Sunday, 6 March 2022

The Gene Radio Show in March celebrated International Women's Day on March 8th. Maxine was joined in the studio by girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers, including Georgia. The episode focused on the global celebration of women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements, highlighting themes of resilience, confidence, and compassion.

Specific guiding activities discussed included a brownie event returning this year. The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts was noted for offering support at guiding and scouting centres. Maxine mentioned that badges are always available for events, and a young leader was looking for a unit. The programme also featured Kirstie Murphy, the first female pilot in the Red Arrows, as a special guest for International Women's Day, and a speaker recalled earning their first aid award.

About this show

The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.

It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
