The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 5 December 2021
The December edition of The Gene Radio Show was presented by Maxine with girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. The programme featured a festive "round the world Christmas challenge" exploring diverse Christmas traditions. Maxine also highlighted a special focus on bees, sharing insights from a recent guiding visit.
Guiding activities discussed included making bird feeders as a unit meeting activity, and participating in the Christmas challenge by collecting stamps in a passport for each country visited. Maxine recounted a visit to a Guides unit where a 'B man' taught them about bees, their four eyes, and they tasted honey biscuits while wearing special goggles. The show also announced a nationwide Girlguiding cinema takeover, with a large group attending locally in Chelmsford.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
