The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 2 May 2021
Maxine presented the May 2021 edition of The Gene Radio Show, joined by Sophia, Holly, and Fiona. The main theme focused on the Duke of Edinburgh Award, with Sophia, Holly, and Fiona sharing their experiences of completing the Bronze award. They discussed their progression into volunteering and leadership roles within Girlguiding, highlighting the personal development and skills gained through these opportunities.
The show also explored various guiding activities, including an expedition involving surveying wildlife with toy monkeys. Badges were a key topic, with mentions of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, the Plastic Promise, and the Blue Peter green badge. Girlguiding Angley is seeking members for activities, and Girlguiding Essex North East needs volunteers. The Essex International Jamboree is looking for camp ideas, and the programme celebrated "Gene birthdays," including a 10th anniversary. The team also announced they are recruiting new members to contribute to the show.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
