The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 7 February 2021
The February edition of The Gene Radio Show celebrated World Thinking Day, presented by Maxine, Amber, and Jess from Girlguiding Essex North East. The team discussed the effort involved in Thinking Day activities, both online and across the county, highlighting the global reach of Girlguiding and the importance of making and keeping promises.
Listeners learned about the 'Craftivism' badge, a mindful process involving making and spreading messages. The show explored making promises in unusual places, including a monument in London and Ranger promises made together. Brownies and Guides also made their promises for the very first time on Zoom. The programme featured a message from Jen, a Guide from Canada, and greetings from the Anglia region, alongside discussions on keeping promises and unit trips.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
