The Gene Radio Show

Sunday, 5 July 2020

The July 2020 edition of The Gene Radio Show featured Maxine alongside Millie and other girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers. The programme explored various Girlguiding activities and initiatives, including the County Commissioner's Challenge and the peer education programme. The team also enjoyed a food-themed quiz and a special round celebrating strong women.

The show highlighted the Girlguiding Essex North East County Commissioner's Challenge, which offered a badge, and encouraged listeners to send in their activities to the county office or Facebook page. Sarah, the county peer education lead, discussed the peer education programme, which trains members aged 14 to 25 to empower younger girls. Eight peer educators were ready to deliver virtual sessions to units, and a virtual sleepover was also mentioned as a successful event.

About this show

The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.

It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
