The Gene Radio Show

Sunday, 3 May 2020

This May 2020 edition of The Gene Radio Show saw Maxine joined by girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers for a lively programme. The main theme was how guiding was continuing remotely, with a focus on virtual activities and quizzes. The team discussed how units were adapting to the new circumstances, and listeners heard about the suspension of UK Girlguiding unit meetings. The new 'adventures at home' activities available on the Girlguiding website were also highlighted.

The girls shared their experiences of virtual guiding, with Vicky describing how she was keeping active and Georgia explaining a new programme she had created. The team also discussed sewing badges onto camp blankets and completing badges. A guiding-themed quiz covered the history of the movement, including who formed the Girl Guides and the original name for Brownies.

About this show

The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.

It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
