The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 5 January 2020
The Gene Radio Show, broadcast on 5th January 2020, was the first programme of the new decade. Maxine and the Girlguiding team, including Ranger Izzy, were in the studio. They reviewed guiding highlights from 2019 and discussed New Year's resolutions for the show. The team also looked ahead to what was coming up in guiding for 2020, with a focus on international guiding experiences.
The programme featured a UK guiding leader who shared experiences of guiding in Australia, discussing youth-led activities, the Queen's Guide Award, and units such as Rose Thorn and Thorncrescent. Badges mentioned included the World badge and another badge. The team recalled a big event in Colchester from 2019. They also looked forward to keeping in touch with the Bentley Ranger Guides and visiting a guiding event in 2020.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
