The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 1 September 2019
The September 2019 edition of The Gene Radio Show, presented by Maxine with the Girl Guiding Team, focused on important transitions and the voices of girls. A key theme was encouraging Brownies to move up to Guides before starting secondary school, highlighting the value of guiding friendships. The programme also explored the "Future Girl" initiative and the "Girlguiding Go Attitude Survey", discussing what matters most to girls and young women. Listeners heard about the prestigious Gold Award for all sections, from Rainbows to Rangers.
The Essex International Jamboree was a big topic, with staff registrations open for over-18s and the opportunity for Peggy to visit units. The Girlguiding Anglia Macmillan challenge and other county challenges were highlighted, alongside discussions of the "Plastic Promise" initiative. The programme also noted the 10th anniversary of the "Girlguiding Go Attitude Survey", which revealed girls' concerns about issues like the wage gap and bullying.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
