The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 4 August 2019
The August 2019 edition of The Gene Radio Show, presented by Maxine and the Girl Guiding Team, explored the many opportunities available within Girlguiding. Vicky, a Ranger who had just turned 18, joined Maxine in the studio to share her experiences and achievements, including her leadership qualification and journey towards the Queen's Guide Award. The show highlighted the progression through the sections and the diverse activities girls can undertake.
Listeners heard about girls earning their gold badges through unit meeting activity cards and skill builders. Vicky discussed her leadership qualification and her trefoil, along with her Ranger Permit, outdoor challenge, and a residential experience as part of her Queen's Guide Award. Other activities mentioned included a festival, a trip to the pier, and Vicky's "Action for Change" project on recycling at her Brownie unit. The county's overnight permit was also discussed.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
