The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 5 May 2019
The May 2019 edition of The Gene Radio Show, presented by Maxine with girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers, reflected on a decade of Guiding. The team discussed the many fun things they had done since 2009, highlighting how Guiding builds confidence and helps girls achieve things they never dreamed possible. The programme also looked ahead to upcoming Guiding events and opportunities.
Specific activities mentioned included attending a women's festival and a Girlguiding event in London. The show celebrated six girls from Kelvin and Feringy Guides for earning their BP awards, the highest award for a Guide on the old program. Listeners were encouraged to check the county Facebook page and diary for upcoming events. The team also recalled a Rainbow celebration, a Guide from Cambridge who started a radio station, and the first Girlguiding CEO, Julie.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
