The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 7 April 2019
The April 2019 edition of The Gene Radio Show, presented by Maxine with girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers, focused on new opportunities within Girlguiding. A major theme was the launch and success of the Smashing Boundaries cricket badge, developed in partnership with Essex County Cricket.
Natalie from Essex County Cricket joined Maxine to discuss the Smashing Boundaries badge, which has seen over 1800 girls participate, and a potential cricket festival. Girls like Amber, Ellie, and Viva shared their experiences, including working on Gold Awards, a Brownie badge about self-esteem, and a new collecting badge. The show also highlighted a Guide unit's period poverty craftivism project and a new partnership between Girlguiding Anglia and Macmillan, which includes a related volunteering badge. Region Chief Commissioner Tracy Foster also visited.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
