The Gene Radio Show

Sunday, 3 June 2018

The June edition of The Gene Radio Show, presented by Maxine and girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers, explored the unique experiences found in Girlguiding. The team highlighted many opportunities, from volunteering in a Brownie group to visiting the Houses of Parliament. A significant part of the programme discussed the Period Poverty Badge, an important initiative Girlguiding is championing.

Listeners heard more about the Period Poverty Badge and related unit activities, including collecting products for girls in units. The Future Girl Badge was also mentioned. The show looked back at Essex Downbury and encouraged volunteering for future events. Girlguiding's presence at Essex Pride was highlighted, where friendship bracelets were made. County Training Day was discussed, and Jane, a leader of a Guide group, received a special mention.

About this show

The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.

It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
