The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 4 February 2018
The Gene Radio Show in February 2018 featured Maxine and girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers in the studio. This edition celebrated various guiding activities and looked ahead to new initiatives and partnerships. The programme highlighted the breadth of opportunities available, from adventurous camps to community engagement and new badge challenges.
Brownies shared their experiences from a camp in Skegness, enjoying circus skills, swimming, and archery. The new Girlguiding Essex North East County Challenge badge for 2017-2018, including the 'Raising the Bar' challenge, was announced. Maxine's Ranger unit and a Guide unit were planning Harry Potter themed nights. Guides were invited to the Houses of Parliament, and there was news of a new Chief Guide. Girlguiding Essex North East was also forming a digital partnership with Essex County Council and celebrating the Vote 100 campaign.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
