The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 6 August 2017
The August edition of The Gene Radio Show marked the end of the summer term for Girlguiding Essex North East. Presenter Maxine welcomed Susanne McAllister, a guide leader from First Gallywood Guides, to the studio. They discussed recent guiding activities, the value of volunteering, and reflected on the summer's sessions. The conversation also looked ahead to the new term, highlighting the importance of friendship and personal development within guiding.
The episode featured a memorable water fun night with slides, foam, water bombs, and pools. Discussions included the Trefoil group for older guides, the new Girlguiding program, and a challenge pack. Other topics covered unit planning, trips to camp, and the possibility of peer educators running an evening. A mini festival for guides was mentioned for the end of August, alongside girls' suggestions for badge goals, including a radio badge.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
