This February 2017 edition of The Gene Radio Show features Maxine and the Girlguiding team. They are joined in the studio by Helen, a County Commissioner, and Julie, the new County Commissioner for Essex North East. The programme explores the guiding journey from Rainbows through to Senior Section, discussing various roles within Girlguiding and looking ahead to World Thinking Day and Internet Safety Day.

Listeners hear about the joy of attending camps and various trips, including a visit to one of the five Girlguiding Wild centres in London. The team reflects on working with different units, from setting up a Rainbow unit to the Senior Section. County news includes the establishment of a county office and the responsibilities of the County Commissioner, overseeing around 7000 girls and leaders. The episode also highlights plans for World Thinking Day, including a renewal of promise and activities in a local church.

About this show

The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.

It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
