The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 7 August 2016
Maxine and girls from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, and Rangers presented The Gene Radio Show this August. The programme explored Girlguiding in general, highlighting the "girls can" campaign and the upcoming Essex International Jambaree. Listeners heard from the Thai Rainbows and learned about the different sections, from Rainbows aged five to seven, up to the senior section. The show also discussed how to get involved and the opportunities Girlguiding offers.
This edition featured Julie Bentley, Chief Executive of Girlguiding, discussing what girls want to do when they grow up. There was talk of the Essex International Jambaree, a "camp CEO" for girls aged 14 to 25, and pack holidays. Maxine shared her recent overnight license qualification, enabling her to take Rainbows and Brownies away. The show encouraged participation in various challenge badges and highlighted the Girlguiding Essex North East website, mentioning a unit where 30 girls completed a challenge.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
