The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 3 July 2016
The July 2016 edition of The Gene Radio Show, presented by Maxine, explored Girlguiding activities both at home and abroad. The programme discussed the differences and similarities between Girlguiding in the UK and Girl Scouts in America, highlighting how girls participate in various sections and events. A key theme was the excitement around upcoming camps and jamborees, with a focus on traditions and what girls can expect.
The episode covered several specific guiding events, including discussions about jamboree traditions and the special jamboree song, with themes like "neon superhero" mentioned for jamboree evenings. Girls were participating in camps such as the Green Camp, known as Mendes Rainforest, Newton's Lab, and a "pink camp". Listeners could also find information about a Gene badge and purchase musical notes neckers.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
