The Gene Radio Show
Sunday, 5 June 2016
The June 2016 edition of The Gene Radio Show featured Maxine and girls from the Girlguiding team discussing the start of the summer camp season. The main theme revolved around various camp experiences, from Brownie residentials to Guide camps, and included a focus on camp recipes. The team shared their favourite aspects of camp and looked forward to upcoming adventures.
The programme highlighted specific guiding activities, including the centenary of the senior section and Rainbows writing letters to the Queen for her birthday. Discussions covered new badges, simplified badge clauses, and the tradition of camp blankets. Camp experiences mentioned included residentials in Norfolk at the Girlguiding Anglia region's old house, a camp at Mercy, and various guide camps, including the "I'm a brownie get me out of here" cooking challenge. Future trips were also discussed, such as visiting Sangam in India, skiing, and attending a democracy festival. Campfire cooking was also a popular topic.
About this show
The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.
It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
