The Gene Radio Show

Sunday, 1 May 2016

This May edition of The Gene Radio Show celebrated the programme's seventh birthday. Maxine was joined in the studio by Guides Charlie, Ari, and Sophie. The main theme of the show was the Gene Radio Roadshow, explaining how it brings media skills and a voice to Girlguiding units across Essex North East. The team discussed the Roadshow's visit to a Gold Guide group and its first visit to a unit, teaching girls to earn communicator badges, including for Rainbows.

Listeners also heard about the Queen's Guide Award, a special Rainbows abroad badge, and Brownie county activities. The programme covered a Senior Section democracy festival, the Senior Section Spectacular centenary event, and a London trip. Further discussions included a Jack Petchey grant, county commissioner Bonnie Hill, and the Girlguiding Essex North East dinner dance.

About this show

The Gene Radio Show was made by Girl Guides. It belonged to Girlguiding Essex North East: Guides from across the county joined Maxine J in the studio, a rotating team of young co-hosts sharing guiding life, community stories, and conversations with politicians and celebrities. For more than a decade, the programme put guiding on the air in the Guides’ own voices.

It began on Saint FM 94.7 in Maldon, a station which has since closed, and moved to Chelmsford Community Radio in 2015. On CCR it was on air on the first Sunday of the month, from 2015 until 2 August 2026, and the archive holds 133 editions. The show has now ended.
